Month: April 2019

My old hardtail

I have an old hardtail that i bought in april, 2010. Its with 26 inch wheels and it has reach a point where i dont want to upgrade it anymore. Dont really feel that it would be worth it to buy parts for it.

I have been using it as a commute bike for the past year but annoying sounds are coming from the drive train making it impossible to ride like that anymore. I have tried fixing things with it but some parts are just getting really bad.

My idea is to use this as a bike for more crazy riding, where i dont really have to care what happens to the bike. I dont have to be careful with it even though i will try to do regular maintenance on it. It would be nice if it lasted a while longer giving me a bike for other types of riding.

I will take a test ride soon to see what can be done.

Three weeks

I have had three weeks of pretty good riding. Since the start april 2nd, i have had ten good rides. Thats more i got each month last summer and it feels really good. Another ride later today and more during the weekend. Feels like i am going to have more rides in april this year than i had for most of the summer last year.

Despite ten good rides, my body has not improved any yet which is a bit annoying. A slight change would have been enough but nothing yet. Hopefully i will feel some changes in the next few weeks. Would be nice to feel that i have more control over the bike than what i have. I will continue to ride as much as possible and try to challenge myself in different ways.

Have some ideas on things i want to do. More on those later.

Riding BMX

Even though i am going to focus a lot on mountain biking and that will be my main bike activity, i want to get back into BMX as well. There are a lot of things with freestyle bmx that interests me that mountain biking can’t give me, and i want to do something about it.

Its way to early though to know how far i want to take it and how far i can take it. It all depends on my mtb riding and the things that happens there. And how well i can deal with my injuries. Hopefully i can have some pretty decent bmx sessions this summer.

I am probably as far away from the XC style riding as you can get. The part where you ride a distance as fast as possible doesn’t interest me at all. The trail riding thing is a bit better. Maybe half way there. I have always been a person who is more interested in technical stuff rather than those focused on stamina. I am always drawn to street bmx and trials riding because it feels good watching others do those things.

I am pretty sure that i need those things in my life to feel really good. To work on my skills, doing interesting things with my bikes, and to improve. To ride the same way that street bmx riders do, the same way trials riders to and mix in some trail riding with that.

There are a lot of things missing right now. Like basic stuff such as strength, stamina, balance, basic technique. And the first step is to get a handle on skills such as jumping, bunny hops, manuals, backwheel hops, drops, and more.

I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

My Scott Voltage

The key bike for me this year will be my dirt jump bike. It will be the one i think that will help me the most with the technical stuff and to improve my skills. I want to get more riding done with this bike and also my BMX bike. My Scott Voltage is in between my BMX and my MTB hardtail in size which i think will help me to deal with everything and then take it in both directions towards the smaller BMX bike and the bigger hardtail trail bike.

I do need to focus a lot on inmproving my core strength, strength in general, stamina and balance/movement. This usually requires a lot more training of the bike and i don’t enjoy doing those things. Its easier if its fun and i will focus a lot on being on the bike. And to improve skills such as jumping, dealing with drops, learning bunny hops, manuals, backwheel hops and other userful techniques.

I will try to find a good way to deal with all of it.

Anyway, i do think that my dirt jump bike will be the most important bike regarding improving my skills and learning new ones.

A pretty good start

I’ve had a pretty good start this spring. Still some annoying ups and downs but my ride sessions have been mostly good. This last saturday gave me some serious pain in my neck. That ride session wasn’t good for me regarding my neck injury. But most of the session went well beside that and was fun.

There have been several good sessions the past two weeks. With the best ones at last sunday and the sunday before that. Lots of technical riding and just getting back into riding. Getting as many good days as possible. And less of those bad day after.

Of those five sessions i have had so far only one gave me problems already during the ride. The other four went well the same day but gave me problems the day after. The biggest issue is the cold wind which affects both my neck injury and other things. Hopefully it will get warmer soon and i can have more of those good days with lots of riding.

Thoughts about my riding this year

Life really messes with you sometimes. I have been living with a neck injury since 2006, having constant pain around my neck and shoulders since then. I have tried getting things better but life don’t always play nice and i still have big problems with that injury. About two and a half years ago i slammed into a concrete floor messing up my ribs pretty bad and i still have problems with that injury, and in january this year i sprained the foot really bad and its still giving me issues. So three injurys are affecting my life.

Previous years things have been really difficult. Lots of other things making it hard to get better and to stay motivated. This year though things are slowly changing for the better. I am finally working with some fun and interesting stuff, which makes the rest of my life a bit easier. And i have started to do things to improve my health and to attempt making my injurys better. Small steps so far but i am doing something for once.

My previous seasons with Mountain Biking and other action sports have not been good. A few sessions here and there.

Started riding again last week. Got three decent sessions that week and i am getting more and more motivated. Fun to ride out in the woods with no other purpose than having fun. Bikes are my main way of transportation and i commute with my bike all year around. Regardless of weather. So i haven’t been completely passive regarding physical activities. But there are a lot of things to work on. I have gained a lot of weight. My strength, stamina and balance is really bad. I spend most of my days sitting in a chair working with a computer.

My plans for this year is to get my riding to a good level. To be out on a regular basis riding my bikes. I will try to train and do some rehab as well so i can deal with my injurys, my weight gain, and those other things. But the main focus will be on my riding. Being active with it and to have fun.

Scott Voltage YZ 0.1

I bought this in april, 2018. It was a used bike that i bought from a neighbor for a pretty good price. I wanted a bike like this and buying this one gave me the opportunity to have one. It was in a pretty good shape. I had to fix the cranks during the summer because of some issues, and i had to buy a front brake. Other than that it was rideable from day one.

Its a 2013 model with 26 inch wheels and a fork with 100 mm travel. The plan is to use this bike for things like dirt jumping, street riding, trials and other technical riding. And to have a different bike to use when practicing stuff. Its nice to have a smaller bike when practicing stuff like jumping, doing manuals, bunny hops and other things. Those are skills i want to be able to do on my 29 inch hardtail as well. The other part i want to focus a lot on is trials and to see how far i can take it.

GT Avalanche Comp

I bought this bike in may, 2018. Needed a new bike and this what i bought. Its a cheaper bike but i really enjoy it. Its the first regular MTB that i have, that has disk brakes. Also the first bike i have with 29 inch wheels. It has a fork with 100 mm travel which is 30 mm more than my previous bike, and a small but nice step forward.

Those things i changed on it after buying was to mount a wider handlebar (800 mm) and a shorter stem to make things more comfortable and give better performance. I put a dropper post on it and thats one of the best things that ever happened to Mountain Biking. I use it a lot during my rides and makes things much easier, and more fun. I put better pedals on it to have some good grip while riding. I bought the NC-17 Sudpin I Pro pedals and i really like them.

This is my main bike, which i do most of my riding. I really enjoy riding it and having 29 inch wheels feels pretty ok. At least during less technical rides.

Getting things going

I have been working today setting things up with my blog. I don’t know if blogging is a big thing anymore with all that social media in existence. But i feel that i need a place to put my thoughts and other things regardless of how many visitors i get.

And i have decided to blog only in english, mostly because i need the practice thinking and writing in english. Its an important part of my work and also a good thing to keep working on for other reasons as well.

The purpose of this blog is to write about all kinds of things relating to my life. But for the moment i will be mostly focused on my health and my rehabilitation, mixed with things relating to my interests in Mountain Biking and BMX. Most of my posts this year will be about those things. And i will try to be as open as possible with most of the things that affects my life in one way or another.

I am hoping to post as often as possible. A few post every week would be nice, but i am happy if i manage to post at least once a week. I have tried blogging before and there have been long gaps between each post. Months, sometimes even more than a year.
